Shiny Object Syndrome…the silent wallet killer. There is a sickness going around in the home-based business industry. It affects newbies and veterans alike. Even the Gurus get infected. It’s a contagion that runs rapidly with every pre-launch, the next big thing, and the promise of the magic pill.
This disease prevents you from making money. It causes you to go deeper into debt. You will lose your email list and fan base, and it will destroy your brand. This beast eats all the cash in your wallet.
S.O.S Will Kill Your Business
Shiny Object Syndrome (S.O.S.) will destroy your business. What is Shiny Object Syndrome? It’s the belief that the next product launch, marketing idea, or Guru will catapult your business to wealth and riches without any work.
S.O.S is the cause of failure in our industry. It gives the false impression that the next big thing is launching now and you better hop on it. It is the magic pill, the push button, don’t do anything, automated riches system that lures you in.
You Need to Vaccinate
You must protect yourself from this outbreak. There is a cure and you need to vaccinate yourself now there will always be new product launches, the next big thing system, and Guru promises. There is nothing new under the sun. Trust me you will not miss the boat. You can catch it later.
First movers advantage, ground floor opportunities, and private invites are all a myth to get you to spend your money. Save your money and focus on your business. Jumping ship every month guarantees that you will never make your business cash flow and it will tire out your list. People don’t follow leaders who can’t decide what business they are in.
Here are 5.5 ways to Vaccinate Yourself from Shiny Object Syndrome:
1. Decide What Business You want to Be In
Most people mess this up. They join a business that doesn’t fit their strengths and talents. Please be in the right business. That is the first step to success. You know what you are awesome at. If you have no clue then ask your spouse, partner, friend, or family member.
S.O.S. will have you switching companies, products, and services if you don’t decide on what you want to do. I know one woman who has been in the nutrition, fitness, and cookware industry in the last 12 months. She has spent thousands on new products and services. Remember it costs to start a new business.
Business is a sprint and marathon. You have to know which race to run and at the right time. Do your due diligence and find the right industry, company, and products for you. Put time and energy into finding the right business. The next big thing doesn’t have anything to do with you.
2. Broke People Look for Shortcuts
I have never heard of an athlete, entertainer, or successful entrepreneur say they took shortcuts to success. Gurus promise you the shortcuts to wealth. If that was true you would be wealthy now and not reading this article. There is a learning curve. There is seed time and harvest. You had to learn your job, how to walk, talk, drive, and swim. It’s the same with your business.
There are no shortcuts and hopping on the next trend will cause you to fail. The promise of shortcuts only delays your chance of making money. There is not one magic pill that will cure all your business ails. Find a plan and system that works for your business and stick to it.
3. The Next Big Thing
Oh Boy! The Next Big Thing is Here! It will lead you to riches beyond your dreams! Don’t fall for the hype. If it is the next big thing, is this for you? Does this new marketing technique, product, or service fit into your business plans? The truth is the deal of a lifetime happens every week.
When you decide on your business and marketing plan you must not let the next big thing deter you. If it takes you away from your main goal. Leave it alone.
4. Tired of Starting Over… Then Stop Quitting
If you keep starting over you will never finish. Every time you jump ship you have to start over. Isn’t that frustrating? Quitters don’t make commitments. Quitting doesn’t bring in the cash flow. Aren’t you tired of people saying that you are in another deal? Plant your flag and build your business.

Just like my lady friend who starts a new business every 90 days. Every time you start over there is a new product to pay for. A new service to add. Chances are you are going into debt with each new business. Stop Quitting.
5. Sales and Marketing
You must have a marketing plan in place. Every business has a marketing plan. S.O.S. is a hazard to your marketing efforts. Fail at marketing and you fail at making sales, building your list, and growing your brand. The secret to marketing is to find 1-3 techniques and master them. There are hundreds of marketing methods. You can’t afford or implement them all.
Start off by picking a strategy that fits your personality, talents, and strengths. Success leaves clues to find entrepreneurs succeeding in those strategies. Invest your time, energy, and money into finding a system that you can afford and put into practice.
The business you have chosen should have a generic marketing plan for you to use. Don’t do anything you hate. Do not corner yourself into a marketing plan you are not comfortable with or that doesn’t fit your strengths.
Shiny objects syndrome has you switching plans, trying unproven methods, and riding the coattails of new trending ideas. Untested methods are a cash drain. Your computer will be filled with PDFs, membership sites, and online books, and your living room will be littered with training material.
I speak from experience. Keep it in perspective. Successful businesses only use a few methods and they have the money to outsource the rest of their advertising. To keep your wallet safe remember there is not one magic pill or instant riches marketing formula.
5.5 Work and Discipline
Anything you buy will require work and discipline. Automated systems will still need your input and take time to set up. Shortcuts keep you broke. Close your wallet and get to work putting in the reps in your business.
Buying everything under the sun doesn’t guarantee sales. Learning, taking action, and measuring results is the only way to succeed. Comment to finish and stay focused on your business. Vaccinate yourself from shiny object syndrome, put blinders on, and build what you have.
